In this module, you’ll learn the foundational elements of Luganda to help you start communicating right away. By the end of this module, you’ll be able to greet people, introduce yourself, count, ask simple questions, and understand the basics of noun classes 1-3.

What You’ll Learn:
  • Basic Greetings: Learn how to say "hello," "how are you," and other common greetings.
    Example: "Oli otya?" (How are you?)

  • Introductions: Practice introducing yourself and asking others their names.
    Example: "Nze [Your Name]." (I am [Your Name].)

  • Numbers 1-20: Master counting in Luganda.
    Example: "Emu" (One), "Bbiri" (Two), "Ssatu" (Three).

  • Simple Questions: Learn how to ask and answer basic questions.
    Example: "Ani?" (Who?), "Kiki?" (What?)

  • Noun Classes 1-3: Understand the basics of Luganda noun classes and how they affect sentence structure.
    Example: "Omusajja" (Man - Class 1), "Omukazi" (Woman - Class 1).

Now that you’ve mastered the basics, it’s time to expand your vocabulary and start forming simple sentences. In this module, you’ll learn words related to family, colors, and food, as well as how to conjugate verbs in the present tense. You’ll also explore noun classes 4-6.

What You’ll Learn:
  • Basic Vocabulary:

    • Family: "Maama" (Mother), "Taata" (Father), "Mwana" (Child).

    • Colors: "Langi y’omutuku" (Red), "Langi y’obululu" (Blue).

    • Food: "Matooke" (Plantains), "Omugati" (Bread).

  • Simple Sentence Structure: Learn how to form basic sentences.
    Example: "Nkya kulya." (I am eating food.)

  • Verb Conjugation (Present Tense): Practice conjugating verbs like "okulya" (to eat) and "okunywa" (to drink).
    Example: "Ndi kulya." (I am eating.)

  • Noun Classes 4-6: Expand your understanding of noun classes.
    Example: "Ekitabo" (Book - Class 4), "Ebintu" (Things - Class 5).

In this module, you’ll learn how to describe objects, ask for directions, and use basic negation. You’ll also dive deeper into noun classes 7-9, which will help you build more complex sentences.

What You’ll Learn:
  • Describing Objects: Learn adjectives to describe size, shape, and color.
    Example: "Ekintu kikulu." (A big thing.)

  • Asking for Directions: Practice asking and understanding directions.
    Example: "Eri ludda wa?" (Where is it?)

  • Basic Negation: Learn how to say "no" or "not" in sentences.
    Example: "Sikulya." (I am not eating.)

  • Noun Classes 7-9: Explore more noun classes and their usage.
    Example: "Akabanga" (A small thing - Class 7), "Obwavu" (Poverty - Class 9).
